LOCAL HISTORY

                                                                                                                  ARACENA

From the archaeological site of the Cueva de la Mora, in the hamlet of Umbria, it is indicated the human occupation in the area has been since the Bronze Age. In the first century BC the Romans settled in the area, due to its extensive mineral wealth.

In Muslim times the Castle of Aracena was built as the population was expanding. In the middle of the thirteenth century, Sancho II of Portugal conquered the town, but the kings of Castile won the place back in 1255, then, integrated into the kingdom of Seville. Until 1833, the town belonged to the province of Seville. When it was joined to the province of Huelva.

Located at the western end of the Sierra Morena and north of the province of Huelva, the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche Natural Park is characterized by an extensive forested area, high rainfall, a mild climate and a natural and cultural heritage that arouses curiosity and interest of any visitor.

The extensive meadows that predominate in this mountain environment have favoured the breeding of the Iberian pig, around which an international export industry has been built that sustains the economy of towns such as Cumbres Mayores or Jabugo. You should not leave the place without tasting its delicious sausages and, of course, its Jamon which originates in Huelva. The Museum of Jamon in Aracena is where you can learn more about the gastronomic traditions of the area.

The landscape changes depending on the altitude and humidity, the dehesas populated by holm oaks are replaced by cork oaks in some areas, while at the higher altitude oak forests are the woodland areas, as in the site of the Solana de los Bonales; On the other hand, in towns such as Fuenteheridos, Galaroza or Castaño del Robledo, the landscape is made up of chestnut trees; and in riverbeds such as the Múrtigas through forest galleries where there are abundant trees such as poplars, ash trees, willows and alders, along with brambles and climbing plants. This last environment provides an ideal resting place for the visitor.

Touring its villages and enjoying its interesting heritage is a fantastic event for the visitor. You can visit the monumental complex of Almonaster la Real, composed of the castle, the church and the mosque, the castle of Cortegana, one of the best preserved in the area or the fortress of Sancho IV in Cumbres Mayores. Another possibility is to enter the caves in Aracena or visit the Peña de Arias Montano in Alájar, which constitute two claims of undoubted natural interest.
